COURSE DESCRIPTION
This
course is designed to help you achieve the outcomes of English 1T, and apply
your understanding and learning of reading/writing processes to other areas of
your academic, professional, and/or personal lives. The course will also focus on publishing your work as a student by creating a portfolio.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
In this course, you
will:
A.Demonstrate meta-cognitive awareness of
the integration between reading and writing processes
- Collect and record the steps and strategies of reading, writing, learning processes
- Write reflections of reading/writing processes and learning processes in order to articulate the purpose and evaluate its effectiveness in different contexts
- Demonstrate meta-cognitive awareness of your location within academic discourse communities and the behaviors necessary for college success
B.
Design and create an e-portfolio of
reading and writing products
- Manage and maintain a portfolio including artifacts of reading, writing, and critical thinking
- Identify the qualitative differences among artifacts
- Apply writing rubrics to evaluate the effectiveness of reading/writing process to achieve effective writing products: essay, paragraph, and sentence levels
- Choose and organize representative artifacts for the overall portfolio

REQUIRED TEXTS
Individual readings as assigned
REQURED MATERIALS
- One electronic medium to collect and organize all of your work for the English 1T course (e.g., a usb drive, google docs, drop box, or your 242A portfolio from last quarter)
- A selected electronic platform on which to create your e-Portfolio (e.g., blog, website)
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance/Class Particiption: 5%
To
get full credit, you must stay current on all assigned readings and
assignments, coming prepared AND ON TIME to participate in class
activities. And because you must be present to participate, absences
can prevent you from passing the participation portion of the grade, or
decrease your grade significantly.
Reflections: 25%
Essay Reflections: You will be responsible for reflecting on your essays, both in-class and out-of-class essays. These will be 3 paragraph written reflections as well as a video response that must be submitted online on your portfolio. More information on the these reflections will be provided in week 2 of the quarter.
Final Reflective Essay: At the end of the quarter, you will be responsible for writing an essay that reflects on your growth as a reader, writer and learner over the fall and winter quarter. This essay will be written in class on the day of the final on March 19.
Personal Dictionary: 10%
You will be required to keep your personal dictionary updated throughout the quarter and this must be posted to your final portfolio. More information on this in week 2.
E-Portfolio: 60%
An electronic portfolio of reading and writing
artifacts representing the continuation of your reading/writing development and
the culmination of your learning in the pathway. Specifics on the portfolio requirements will be provided later in the quarter.
Note: Any students earning a C- and lower in English 1T will placed into an
appropriate English class (1B, 1A, 110, or 209) based on a faculty committee
review of your ePortfolio, looking specifically at the quality of writing.
POLICIES
You must receive at least a C average (>72%) to pass this course. See
FAQ.
Attendance: Reflections will be guided and many will be written in class. Therefore, attendance in this course is crucial for your success. After 2 absences (excused or unexcused) I reserve the right to drop you from the class. If you are dropped from 242B, you will be dropped from 1T. Absence is not a valid excuse for coming to the next class unprepared or for missing work.
Etiquette: This class
incorporates peer review and group work. Therefore, you’ll be expected to treat
your classmates, their work, and their opinions/thoughts with respect and
thoughtful consideration. Please be considerate and use good judgment when
using electronic devices in class.

received. Students with documented learning and/or physical disabilities may
